Before You Go
Grand Hotel and Mackinac Island are truly unique destinations. Before you visit us, here are a few things to know to make your trip easier.
Check-In and Check-Out
Check-in time is after 4:00 p.m. and check-out time is 11:00 a.m. Every effort will be made to accommodate early arrivals and late check-outs. Please notify Grand Hotel if you have any special requests.
If you arrive by ferry, luggage transfer is simple and convenient. When you check in your luggage with the ferry service on the mainland, it will be tagged and delivered directly to your hotel room. Upon check-in, present your luggage tags at the front desk. If you are arriving close to 6:00 p.m. you may want to bring your evening wear with you to the hotel as luggage transfer may take up to two hours to get to the hotel from the dock.
For your return trip back to the mainland, follow the in-room instructions. Your luggage will be tagged and transferred from your room to a secure location on the appropriate mainland dock. We request a minimum two-hour window for the transfer.
Please note that an added fee of $8.50 per person applies for the round-trip transfer of luggage.
Getting Here from the Boat Docks
Grand Hotel is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the boat docks. For your convenience, Grand Hotel operates horse-drawn carriages between the docks and Grand Hotel. As with all taxi service on Mackinac Island, there is a $5.00 per person fee and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee Grand Hotel carriages will meet all ferry boats, nor can we guarantee seats for all Grand Hotel guests.
Mackinac Island Maps
Whether you are walking, hiking or biking, download and consult these maps to help you explore the island.
Mackinac Island enjoys a mild spring, temperate summer and crisp fall temperatures. Because the island is located in the middle of the Straits of Mackinac, weather can be unpredictable. We recommend packing layers and don’t forget your walking shoes.
Since Grand Hotel is a resort, we want all guests to feel at ease and dress comfortably. During the day, casual resort clothing is appropriate. Prior to 6:30pm please no midriff baring tops, sweatpants or cut-off shorts for ladies. For gentleman no sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, or cut-off shorts.
Every evening at Grand Hotel is a special occasion. After 6:30pm dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentleman are required to wear a suit coat, necktie and dress pants, no denim or shorts. This applies for all areas inside the hotel with the exception of the Cupola Bar. Children 12 years and older are expected to follow the same dress code as adults.
