For nearly a decade, a local coffee shop has been donating every penny to a local charity. Not just sometimes, but every day, year-round, every penny is given away. The coffee and lunch menu is amazing, the money stays local, and something as simple as a cup of coffee is literally saving lives. “It’s way more than a great cup of coffee.”

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Coffee lovers in the Upper Peninsula and all over the world have a lot of options; national chains, local coffee shops, home brews, and Keurig. Often times, consumers are searching for the easiest cup without too much thought about the money spent. Gas stations give free cups on your daily commute and with the press of a button you can brew a multitude of flavors at your finger tips. But, what if you could purchase a cup of coffee, and change lives in your community?

That’s exactly what ‘Your Coffee for a Cause’ in Marquette is hoping to accomplish. Not many people outside the shops’ devoted customers know that in every cup there’s a gift to UPHS patients and their families.

The Hospitality House of the Upper Peninsula, which oversees operations for Beacon House, also benefits from two private coffee shops that give every penny they make to the cause. One in the UPHS lobby, the other at Peninsula Medical Center in Marquette.

Not just some or a small percentage of the proceeds benefit charity, it’s every penny. ‘Your Coffee for a Cause’ is unlike any other coffee shop in the U.P. The non-profit channels all the proceeds to one single essential charity. They don’t do it some of the time, or during a certain month. For the past decade, it’s been donating all of its profits, every day, every month, year-round, and every.single.penny to Beacon House.

When you enjoy a hot or cold beverage, a snack or a light lunch, you’re making a donation to the Hospitality House of the U.P.’s services; Beacon House, the Hospitality Rooms, and the Wig Salon for Cancer Patients. Baristas concoct daily, weekly, and monthly specials, and beverages of which you’re familiar; the shops carry Starbucks products. Bakery items stock the shelves, too. Local vendors like Baby Cakes, Huron Mountain Bakery, and New York Deli pitch in for light snacks, sandwiches, and other lunch items. It’s a one-stop-shop for all things delicious, and all things local.

So, what if you could shop local, donate to charity, and get your coffee fix in the same purchase? 100% of the proceeds from this local coffee shop are donated to charity.

“100% is huge,” says Andrew Lorinser, Public Relations Manager of Beacon House Marquette. “Often times we don’t think about where our money is going when we make a small purchase for a cup of coffee. But, when you can enjoy a snack, a lunch, a cup of coffee, and and save lives, it makes a big impact. That’s what Beacon House does, save lives. Without our services, patients and families wouldn’t have a place to stay when receiving critical care at UPHS. Many would opt out of treatment, and be in life-threatening, dire situations. We are incredibly grateful to ‘Your Coffee for a Cause’ for helping our guests.”

The coffee shops are essential to what the organization does. Not only do they help Beacon House, Hospitality Rooms, and the Wig Salon for Cancer patients operate, it’s a self sustaining organization, so every piece of that profit goes directly to the charity. Giving to the Beacon House cause makes managing and working at the coffee shops a more enjoyable place for baristas, and managers say it in-turn boosts morale and positive customer service from its employees.

“It’s way more than a great cup of coffee.”

“Our baristas are unique in the sense that they’re not just here for a paycheck,” said ‘Your Coffee for a Cause’ manager Amy Runstrom. “Any local coffee shop is inherently a warm and friendly place to be, but because we all believe in the work of Beacon House, our shops offer something extra special. Our knowledgeable baristas are  creative and can make custom orders. They’re happy to do it, too. Making customers smile makes us smile, and Beacon House makes patients and their families smile. It’s way more than a great cup of coffee.”

Beyond giving to one of the most essential charities in the Upper Peninsula, just keeping money local has benefits for your community. According to a study by Michigan State University‘s Center for Community and Economic Development, shopping local contributes more to new job growth, keeps money in the community, and invests in charitable contributions.

You can see that in action with the purchase of a single cup of coffee. The next time you’re on the way to or from work, stop by ‘Your Coffee for a Cause’, give back to your community, and reward yourself with delicious beverages from friendly baristas.
